Jackson McDonald celebrates 90th Anniversary at Government House Ballroom

On Thursday 15 November 2012, leading independent Western Australian law firm Jackson McDonald celebrated 90 years of service and legal practice at Government House Ballroom in Perth with some 350 clients and leaders of the legal profession and community as guests.

Highlights of the evening included addresses by His Excellency Malcolm McCusker AC CVO QC, Governor of Western Australia, and The Hon. Wayne Martin AM QC, Chief Justice of Western Australia. Both had had a long association with Jackson McDonald as former leading senior counsel in Western Australia and told a number of amusing stories relating to their experiences while noting the significant contribution Jackson McDonald has made to the law and business community of Western Australia. Chief Justice Martin mentioned that some six Judges had been drawn from the ranks of Jackson McDonald over its history including former Chief Justice Sir Lawrence Jackson KCMG. Other distinguished guests included The Hon. Stephen Smith MP, Minister for Defence; Hon. Michael Mischin MLC; Attorney General for WA, The Hon. Justice John Chaney, President of the State Administrative Tribunal; His Hon. Judge Peter Martino, Chief Judge of the District Court of Western Australia; and Chief Magistrate Steven Heath, along with other members of the judiciary from the Federal, Supreme and District Courts of Western Australia.

Guests were greeted by 1920’s style paper boys delivering the ‘Jackson McDonald Times’ inside of which they were treated to a nostalgic journey of the firm’s history. Indigenous group Doorum Dancers performed a traditional dance and didgeridoo performance and Jackson McDonald lawyer Rebecca Seabrook opened proceedings singing the national anthem.

Jackson McDonald Chairman of Partners, Richard Sandover spoke about the genesis of the firm in 1922, the progression of the firm in step with the WA economy and touched on some of the successes of the firm, its strong culture as a Western Australian based firm and leadership role in business and community affairs.

“Jackson McDonald has endured and grown for the best part of four generations. Our success can in great part be attributed to our strong collegiate culture, commitment to ethical standards and willingness to embrace change and identify and seize opportunities ... drawing on our independent tradition and strong international, national and regional client base,” he said.

The celebration follows the firm being awarded Perth Law Firm of the Year for the fifth time in the past six years at the 2012 Australasian Legal Business (ALB) Law Awards held in May 2012, and the firm’s merger with boutique law firm McKenzie Moncrieff in September last year strengthening its Corporate, M&A, Mining & Resources and Insolvency & Reconstruction groups.

Established in 1922, Jackson McDonald has a leading presence as the largest independent law firm in Western Australia and is committed to serving the community and supporting the growth of WA industries. As a long standing adviser spanning multiple industries, Jackson McDonald has advised and represented clients in respect of many complex, challenging and landmark transactions.
